Bangladesh's economy remains heavily reliant on the textile and clothing industry, which continues to be the largest sector for foreign exchange earnings. The Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector has seen substantial growth over the years. For example, in the financial year 2021-2022, the RMG sector generated approximately USD 42.61 billion, accounting for around 82% of total export earnings and about 13.6% of the country’s GDP. The industry has continued to expand, with projections indicating that garment exports could potentially double in the next decade. The textile sector remains a significant source of employment, representing roughly 40% of all industrial jobs in Bangladesh. The growth of the RMG sector is driven by both domestic and international factors, including increasing global demand for affordable fashion and improvements in production capabilities. Efforts to enhance sustainability and working conditions are also shaping the future of this crucial sector.
